A lifetime’s commitment to cure needless blindness

There should be no children
of a lesser God.

“Blindness does not discriminate; therefore its care too, should not. Everyone should be able to access their right to receive good sight”

-Dr Sanduk Ruit on Curing Blindness in the Developing World

THE PROBLEM

  • 4 out of 5 cases of blindness are preventable
  • Cataracts are the leading cause of preventable blindness
  • 90% of the world’s cataract blind lives in the developing world
  • Blindness has a huge economic and social cost, and pushes families further into poverty

Cataracts can be cured via a simple cataract surgery; however the following barriers are a hindrance towards increased uptake:

Affordability:

Despite cataract surgery being as inexpensive as USD 40 per surgery, many families are unable to afford the cost of surgery.

Accessibility:

Many times, those living with cataracts are unable to get to a facility to avail treatment because the hospital is too far away from them.

Awareness:

At many times, people living with cataracts are unaware about the availability of treatment, and continue to live a life of needless blindness.
